The
NY Times carried an obituary this morning for Jaroslav Pelikan. He died this past Saturday at age 82. Pelikan
was a historian who influenced me a lot during my younger years. The Sterling professor of history at Yale University,
he wrote many books. The first book of his I read was back in 1959, The Riddle of Roman Catholicism. My mother
was raised as a Roman Catholic. Pelikan himself was brought up in a Lutheran household and remained Lutheran for much
of his life. But in his later years he became a member of the Orthodox Church in America. "For a long time I was
like a pilot circling the airport, looking for a way to land," he said.

I'm going to be away from home for a couple
of weeks, so there will likely not be any new postings during that time
